Negative, as in the inverse of an image. Historically, ‘development’ was linked to light, but needed conditions of darkness. Development in the future seems to depend on space. Where do you sleep or stay? How did you mark that time?

Hartwig Proxy is pleased to invite you to Negative Hotel, where we will offer coffee, tea, and a first visit to our space, which is still under construction. Coinciding with the end of Amsterdam Art Week, a group of artists is invited to be present in the space for the duration of the afternoon, with the contents of a bag.

The title adapts the expectations one has from a hotel. A guest makes a reservation, checks into a clean room, stays for a period while largely avoiding interaction, possibly pursuing the best experience possible for themselves, and checks out. Service should facilitate this, as invisibly as possible. Proxy is not a hotel, and aims to be hospitable, while still lacking some facilities. Absent are beds, breakfast buffet, gym, shower, pool, shoeshine, bar, armchairs, wifi, bedding, hairdryer, towels. How could one remain in their room under these conditions? Could you accept a shared room with strangers? As more unexpected visitors arrive, the capacity for hospitality gets challenged. What is needed to host now, and host better in the future? What is outside of its doors?

Negative Hotel also serves as the launch of Proxy Columns, a pilot programme in which writing is regularly commissioned to appear first in hard copy at Proxy; a draft to discuss over a beverage, then later edited into a collection and further distributed.

Hartwig Proxy is a testing ground, and is imagined as a meeting place for the neighbourhood and the city in the years before the Hartwig Museum opens. Proxy will be a space for exchange and experimentation, a space to visit, engage in discussion with us, spend time, and meet people in open formats of all kinds.
